Joint KCBS / ABBQ Certified Competition Judges Training Course on August 31 2018 in Windsor Victoria
De Bortoli Winery in Dixons Creek sees the 2018 Woodfired BBQ Championship take place on Saturday 1 September, 2018 at 58 Pinnacle Lane, Dixons Creek Victoria in the beautiful vineyards of the Yarra Valley from 8.30am.
25 Teams from 4 States will compete for $8,000 in Cash and Trophies in this Australian Barbeque Society (ABBQ) Promoted, Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS) Sanctioned Event. There are 5 categories being contested – Exotic, Chicken, Pork, Pork Ribs and Brisket commencing at 11.30am. There will also be the crowning of the Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion of the event, which is Sponsored by De Bortoli Wines.
Visitors to this free event can purchase BBQ from our Food Trucks, maybe a coffee or dessert, or enter a draw for either a Baked Bean Eating Competition at 1.00pm or a Hot Dog Eating Competition at 3.30pm. Just fill out an entry and place it into the barrel and if you are one of the 8 lucky contestants drawn out, you would win $150.00 for 1st Place, $100.00 for 2nd Place of $50.00 for 3rd Place.
Come along for Wine Tastings, listen to the music happening all day and smell the smell of American Style BBQ as it fills the air. A great day out and is Kid’s Friendly.
Ever wanted to Judge BBQ and be part of the “behind the scenes” action of an American Barbeque Competition, now you can. A joint KCBS / ABBQ Judging Course will be undertaken on Friday 31 August 2018 from 9.00am to 1.00pm inclusive, registrations from 8.30am. Cost to undertake the course is $150.00 ($157.50 if paid by Credit Card) and you will become both a KCBS and ABBQ Certified Judge through the one course. The course is being held at the Melbourne Bowling Club, 138 Union Street, Windsor Victoria 3181. Application will only be accepted on the Application Form found below, limited to the first 50 applicants for this event and must be registered and paid by no later than Friday 24 August 2018, if not filled prior.

ABBQ Judging Courses
The Australian Barbeque Society (ABBQ) requires the services of Trained Barbeque Judges Nationally to undertake Barbeque, Get Out and Grill Backyard Cooker, Kid’s Q and Steak Off Judging Assignments at Competitions to be held by the ABBQ throughout Australia.
We hold regular Judging Seminars covering all ABBQ Category Judging Assignments in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, Adelaide and Perth.
Judges will be required to undertake a 6 hour, fully comprehensive Barbeque Seminar which includes the following:
- Barbeque Pre-Test (to see what you do and don’t know)
- Definition of Barbeque
- Official Meat Categories (Pork (Whole Hog & Shoulder), Pork Ribs, Beef Brisket, Seafood, Poultry, Lamb, Sauces & Anything Butt)
- The Judging Process

- Judging Categories – What we Judge and Not Judge
- Judging Standards
- Judging Multiple Categories
- Pitfalls of Judging
- Blind Judging Demonstration

The Australian Barbeque Society will not allow any person to Judge any Competition Teams without first completing the approved ABBQ Judging Seminar.
The ABBQ Scoring System is Computerized and calculates precisely all points entered from our Certified Judges, allowing scores to be fairly and professionally tallied, offering 100 percent correct and unbiased scoring of all competing team’s turn-ins.
The ABBQ also sanction third party competitions for Promoters, but in all instances, the event operates under the ABBQ Rules and all judging is carried out under the strict judging guidelines set by the ABBQ and utilising computerised tallying of all scores from all teams in the Competition. All Judging Cards and the data entry of the information is available to all ABBQ Teams and Promoters in the event they are not satisfied the calculations have been entered or calculated in accordance with the Judges Score Cards completed at the time of Judging.
At all times, the ABBQ want to be completely transparent and an honourable Judging Body. Any part of our process is open for enquiry and investigation at anytime.
For potential Judges who are unable to attend a scheduled Seminar, we are happy to undertake Seminar Classes for a minimum of 20 persons.
The cost of the Judging Seminar is $99.00 and includes the Course, all written materials, Course Certificate, Lanyard, Judge ID Badge, Morning Tea and Lunch. Seminar is limited to the first 50 registrants.
